Information for Departing Students

Email

Your Providence College email account will expire on September 1 following your graduation.  It is recommended that you create a new email account to use after this occurs. Google, Yahoo, and Hotmail offer free web-based email, and most Internet Service Providers offer a number of email accounts to their customers. You can setup the Out of Office Assitant. This sends a message into which you can insert your new email address. Unfortunately, you cannot use both of these together. Regardless of which one you choose, you should personally inform all your contacts of your e-mail address change.

Also, any e-mail that is still saved on your Providence College e-mail account will not be automatically forwarded.  You will need to manually forward any messages you wish to keep to your new e-mail address.  If you use an e-mail client (such as Outlook or Eudora), your email should already be saved to your computer.

Once September 1 comes, your email account will be completely deleted, including any messages left in your account. The IT department is not responsible for your email after this date. Also, if you have your email account forwarded, the forwarding will stop when your account is deleted.

Anti-virus Software

If you have McAfee VirusScan installed on your computer, you do not need to remove it. This software will never expire and will continue to update itself with virus definitions to help keep your computer protected from viruses. If you choose to purchase your own anti-virus software, you should uninstall McAfee VirusScan from your computer as it will conflict with other anti-virus software and cause your computer to run more slowly.

In addition to VirusScan, some students also had the McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Agent installed onto their computer. While McAfee VirusScan is set up to routinely check for updates, the EPO Agent allowed the IT Department to push VirusScan updates to on-campus computers in the event of a virus emergency. If you want the EPO Agent removed from your computer, you can download the EPO Agent removal tool.

Network Storage

You should backup any information you have saved to your network drive (or G: drive). You access your drive from the labs by logging into the computers using your own username and password or from your own computer using our directions. You can then save your files to a CD-R or USB flash drive or upload them to a Box.net account. If you plan on e-mailing any files to yourself, please use an account other than your Providence College account (such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail), as your Providence College account can only hold 100 MB of data at a time and will be de-activated a few months after graduation.

Alumni Email Accounts

The Office of Instutional Advancement has partnered with alumniconnections.com to offer Providence College alumni "email for life" via the Providence College Alumni Online Community.
