Providence is commonly referred to as the "Renaissance City". In the 1920s the city experienced a great economic decline, and was hit especially hard by the Great Depression.  An upswing began in the 1970s with an urban renewal project. Former Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci Jr's pushed for further revitalization.

Today, Providence continues to undergo changes, and the city has a rich restaurant, shopping, music and nightlife scene. Visit the following pages for information about where to visit around town.

Waterplace Park is another wonderful place to experience. It is right by Providence Place MAll and is the site of Waterfire during the summer months. Waterplace Park is a large pool of water that is filled by the Wonasquitucket River as it flows into Providence under the Mall. The pool is surrounded by walkways that allow the visitor to experience the city at a leisurely pace from a unique perspective. The walkways go from the mall, down to RISD, and over to the large glass box building where Hemingways resturant is located. During the summer months when Waterfire is happening, Gondolas, like those in Venice, Italy are plying the waters and are available to ride in. Also, during the summer months free concerts take place periodically. Enjoy.
