Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect to the wireless network?

Please see our wireless networking page for more information about the wireless network on campus.

How do I connect to the wired network?

You need a computer with an ethernet adapter (all newer computers come with one pre-installed) and an ethernet cable (we recommend one about 25 feet long to accommodate any movement of furniture in the residence halls). Ethernet cables can be purchased at the PC Bookstore located on the lower level of Slavin Hall. Simply plug your cable into the proper jack (notated by a blue icon next to the live jack) and your internet should work.

Are there any restrictions on the network?

We actively throttle speeds of peer-to-peer traffic, such as Bit Torrent, KaZaA, Limewire, and BearShare. By nature, these types of programs seek to use up as much available bandwidth as possible, hindering legitimate academic use of the PC network.

Are there any requirements for computers connected to the PC network?

All computers connected to the PC network must have up-to-date virus protection software with the latest virus definitions installed. If you don't have any or your virus protection is about to expire, the IT department provides a copy of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise to all students free-of-charge. You simply need to pick up a Resource CD from the Helpdesk in Accinno 102.

I have a Mac. My computer is safe from viruses, right?

Not necessarily. With the increasing number of Macs being sold, virus writers will start to attack those as they do Windows-based computers. In addition, while Macs might be less susceptible to viruses, they can transmit Windows viruses. All Macs are also required to have virus protection. The Helpdesk also has CDs with McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for MacOS.
