One often overlooked aspect of computer security is the physical security of your computer. This is the actual ability of someone to gain physical access to your computer by sitting down in front of it. The following are a set of guidelines to make your computer more physically secure.
- Use a screen saver that does not display what it on your desktop.
- Set your computer to require a password after waking up from sleep or after deactivating a screen saver.
- Set your computer to run the screen saver or lock after a certain period of inactivity.
- 5-10 minutes is generally a good guideline.
- Lock the door to your office when you are away.
- If you use a laptop, use a laptop cable lock to attach it to your desk.
- Always lock the door to your office or lock the laptop in a filing cabinet when you leave your office.
